‘Botanical Encounters’ Drop-In Arts Workshop: Decolonising our relationship with plants and gardens
Simbah Pilé (artist, Barbados ) and Lúcia Harley (artist and educator)
The Western colonial enterprise was fuelled by a botanical rush, which resulted in many of the ‘decorative’, medicinal, and staple food plants used in the United Kingdom today. In this workshop, we engage creatively with this plants-based heritage, reflecting on its impact on our identities and everyday practices through the method of collage and mixed media, utilising plant motifs, some of which will be previously gathered from our neighbouring St James’ Park.

Exploring Colonialism through Plant Motifs. Creative Workshop with Simbah Pilé
In this workshop we will endeavour to engage creatively through the method of collage and mixed media, with the complicated history of the European botanical rush and colonisation of other countries and people as well as how it is still present and silently interacting with our day-to-day lives. We will utilise plant motifs some of which will be previously collected/ gathered from around the city of Bath, others will be of commonly over looked house and garden plants that were introduced to this country by colonial botanists.
This event is part of Botanical Encounters Project.
